The Supplier Quality Engineer will be responsible for the administration of the company’s supplier quality management system, and specifically assuring optics and other purchased accessories conform to requirements and related supplier capabilities are consistent with company needs. Collects and analyzes data related to supplier quality performance and leads associated improvement opportunities. Collaborates with internal stakeholders such as supply chain, production, and engineering to understand and deploy expectations with suppliers, and facilitates supplier quality planning and execution for company’s products.
Lead supplier quality efforts related to optics product lines and other purchased accessories, including supplier quality approvals, monitoring and measurement, surveillance and corrective actions/improvement. Collaborate with supply chain to approve associated vendors, including initial assessments, plant visits and facilitation of review/inspection of product samples. Conduct supplier on-site quality audits and work with suppliers to address non-conformances and other improvement opportunities. Use root cause analysis to determine effective corrective actions. Lead preparation of first article inspections of supplier components, including identification of critical features with engineering, and coordination with incoming inspection to assure proper inspection techniques.
Review supplier inspection data to assure integrity and provide data analysis, as needed. Communicate effectively with all departments, particularly Inspection, Supply Chain and Engineering, regarding supplier problems and corrective action.
Seek and act upon ways to improve daily work processes to enhance quality and productivity, and satisfy customer needs and expectations; look for cost reduction and service improvements; eliminate unnecessary or low priority work; initiate and encourage others to resolve impediments and act on improvement opportunities, particularly related to the suppliers.
Perform as the supplier quality function main liaison with outside service providers (eg, coatings, heat treatment)
Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, suppliers, and fellow employees.
Participate on, or lead, problem solving teams for driving to root cause of internal and supplier quality failures.
Education and/or Experience:
5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in quality management with suppliers located in China and fluency in Mandarin a plus.
Detailed knowledge of components, assemblies and product form, fit and function. Working knowledge of optics a plus.
Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Knowledge of basic statistics and quality management concepts, including cost of quality
Ability to identify and analyze the root cause of supplier quality issues and recommend appropriate corrective action.
Basic computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Knowledge of Oracle MRP systems a plus.
Able to lift packages up to 25 lbs
Able to travel domestically and internationally (about 25%), with particular emphasis on China.
