SIG SAUER Continues To Expand Its Line Of SIG556 Rifles

SIG SAUER introduces the latest versions of this legendary Swiss rifle.

Exeter, New Hampshire – February 2, 2008 – No other semi-automatic rifle has captured the imagination of the shooting public like the SG 550 series rifle. For years this legendary Swiss made rifle has been restricted to law enforcement and military sales where it has continuously built on its reputation for outstanding performance, accuracy, and durability. In 2007 SIG SAUER started its next generation of legendary rifles with the new family of SIG556 models. The SIG556 features the same high performance full length gas piston operating rod system used world wide in the SG 550 series assault rifle.  Gas volume is regulated by a two position gas valve.  This proven design practically eliminates carbon build up and firing residue from the rifle’s interior, ensuring reliable function under the most extreme conditions.  Building upon this innovative platform, in 2008 SIG SAUER will be launching several new versions dedicated to specific tasks warranted by agencies and operators throughout the world. Building upon this innovative platform, SIG SAUER today introduced the addition of 3 new rifles to the SIG556 family. 

The SIG556 DMR (Designated Marksman’s Rifle) features a 24” military grade cold hammer-forged heavy contour barrel.  The rifle is chambered in 5.56 NATO, with a twist rate of 1 in 9”.  The match grade heavy barrel features a target crown and matte black nitride finish for the ultimate in corrosion resistance.  The forearm, housing the gas operating system, is a vented non-slip polymer featuring the SIG TriRail™ design with three integrated Picatinny rails for mounting a bipod and other accessories.  The Picatinny rail equipped receiver is made of high strength steel with a durable wear-resistant Nitron X™ rifle finish.  The rifle comes standard with the flip-up combat front and rear sight system.  The trigger housing is machined from an aircraft grade aluminum alloy forging with a hard-coat anodized finish designed to survive extreme conditions.  The rifle comes equipped with an enhanced single stage target trigger, ambidextrous safety and is designed to accept standard AR magazines.  The DMR features the Magpul PRS® Precision Rifle Stock with adjustable comb and length of pull.  The ergonomically designed pistol grip features an integrated storage compartment.

The SIG556 HOLO™ features a holographic sighting system that allows for quick target acquisition, with four illuminated reticle patterns with adjustable intensities.  It has a proven two-position adjustable gas valve system joined to a lightweight alloy trigger housing that accepts standard AR magazines.  The vented non-slip polymer forearm has three Picatinny rails for accessory mounting.  The SIG556 stock is collapsible and has a rubber butt pad and a number of sling attachment points.

The SIG556 ER™ shaves a pound of weight by incorporating the redesigned alloy trigger housing, AR style magazine and flash suppressor.  Using flip-up front and rear emergency back-up sights, the ER model brings the same high level of performance and features found in all SIG556 rifles in a more affordable package.
