Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Is RuBee technology the same as RFID?

A. RuBee is not RFID – it is an on demand peer‐to‐peer protocol that works like WiFi, except it uses magnetic waves not radio waves. RuBee received the Frost and Sullivan award for technological innovation in 2007. RuBee is a pending IEEE standard P1902.1. RuBee is different from RFID in many important ways:

  • RuBee unaffected by water, works around metals, and steel can enhance signal. (RFID is line-of-site near steel and water) Sig Sauer’s Weapon tags are waterproof and military rugged
  • RuBee has high noise immunity and works in harsh environments
  • RuBee reads in a volume vs. RFID which reads in an “angled cone” – like a flash light, beacon.
  • RuBee has a range from 2” to 100’ depends on tag and antenna design
  • RuBee is very low power with long battery life (Depending on use 5 -10+ year battery life are practical)
  • RuBee has no known health or safety risks – no affect on Pacemakers or ICD’s, and FDA categorized as Non-significant risk (NSR) in US hospital operating rooms.
  • RuBee Security Plans have been approved at numerous Department of Energy sites for use in highest security areas. RuBee is in use in some of the most secure facilities in world.
  • RuBee has no eavesdropping, or tempest risk, and has optional Range Management that can insure it cannot be used for target identification.
  • RuBee tags can be customized with optional sensors (temperature, pressure, shock) Sig Sauer is currently offering Shot Count Rounds Management features.

Q.  Is RuBee safe and reliable in the real world?

A.  Yes, it is based on extensive testing and independent laboratory certifications the RuBee protocol:

  • Meets FDA, FCC and AHA recommendations for safe use
  • Has no serious known Electromagnetic Interferences (EMI)  or Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) issues or safety issues in hospitals, airports, public buildings, homes, or other likely operating environments.
  • Has no known effect on biologics, biochemicals or living systems.
  • Is below all government and peer-reviewed published specifications for both electric and magnetic fields for safe use near pacemakers, IDCs, and all known medical equipment.
  • RuBee Tags are both Intrinsically Safe and Nonincendive in hostile harsh environments.
