The term “night sights” generally refers to fixed sights for handguns that are optimized for viewing in low-light conditions. These are a variation of “iron sights” and use no electronics or battery power. Night sights feature a front sight post and rear notch with embedded dots made of a vial containing a harmless amount of radioactive material that glows—typically Tritium. Fiber optic night sights require a small amount of ambient light to illuminate, while Tritium sights glow on their own, but their brightness does wear out over time. Many handgun shooters prefer night sights because they are easier to see in a variety of lighting conditions—both day and night. Night sights generally come in three main colors: green, orange, or red but there are a variety of options available.
