SIG SAUER Glossary: Red Dot Sight (RDS) Defined

Red Dot Sight (RDS)

A red dot sight is typically an electronic, fixed-magnification optic that attaches to a firearm. The “dot” is projected on a lens within the optic and provides an easily visible aiming point for the shooter. Typically, these dots are colored red, though some “red dot sights” use green dots based on the shooter’s preference. Red dot sights require only the dot and the target to be aligned as opposed to traditional iron sights which require the front and rear sights to be aligned in unison with the target. Due to their simplicity, red dots are usually found to be easier to shoot accurately and quicker on target than iron sights. There are red dot sights designed for just about any firearm, including rifles, shotguns, and pistols, and they are typically attached to rail sections on rifles and shotguns, or on specific mounting solutions located at the rear portion of a pistol slide.
