AR-10:

The grandfather of the popular AR-15 rifle, the AR-10 was originally designed by Eugene Stoner of the Armalite company in the late 1950s to replace the U.S. Military’s M1 Garand. Chambered in 7.62x51mm, the AR-10 was a major departure from previous U.S. military rifles, incorporating a polymer pistol grip, handguard, and buttstock. The unique design was about two pounds lighter than the M1 Garand it was to replace and had an effective range of about 600 meters. The U.S. military did not adopt the AR-10 as its service rifle, instead opting for the 5.56 NATO caliber AR-15, which was designated as the M-16. The AR-10 is still a very popular design in the civilian and military market, sporting modern materials and ergonomics, and can be tailored to an individual’s shooting style. Typically, AR-10s are still chambered in 7.62x51mm or .308 caliber, but other “AR-10-style” rifles are chambered in other long-range calibers, such as 6.5 Creedmoor.
