With so-called DA/SA firearms, the first shot is initiated with the double-action function of the trigger where the hammer is cocked back and released with a press of the trigger. The hammer is reset by the cycle of the slide and then the follow-up shots are fired with the hammer already cocked back; the single action of the trigger releases the hammer to fire another round. The double-action of the trigger requires more force to actuate and is thought to cut down on negligent discharges, since the shooter must exert more deliberate effort to take the first shot. In single-action mode, the pistol’s slide cocks the hammer with its rearward movement after a shot, presenting the shooter with a less strenuous trigger pull for follow-up shots.
