Primarily a feature of 1911-style handguns, a grip safety is a mechanical device built into the rear portion of the grip that prevents the pistol from firing unless it is firmly grasped. When a shooter grips the pistol, they depress a spring-activated panel that releases the internal safety. Since 1911 platforms use a single-action-only operating system, the handgun typically is carried with a cocked hammer. Some manufacturers build non-1911-style handguns with grip safeties, particularly on pistols intended for concealed carry.
