The term modern sporting rifle is used to define rifles with similar design aspects as the AR-15. “Modern sporting rifle” was developed in response to the misuse of the term “assault rifle” being used to define semi-automatic rifles similar to the AR-15. Since an AR-15 is technically a rifle made by a single manufacturer, MSR covers all semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifles with the same basic characteristics and ergonomics as an AR-15. For example, while not technically an AR-15, the SIG SAUER M400 TREAD has a similar design to the AR-15 but is generally said to be an example of a “modern sporting rifle.”
