A muzzle brake is a device that can be attached to the threaded muzzle to help reduce barrel movement during shooting, some designs also reduce felt recoil. Typically made from a metal alloy, a muzzle brake has holes and gaps machined into it that help redirect the exiting gas from a shot to keep the firearm as level as possible when the bullet exits. This helps shooters stay on the target for follow-up shots and reduces the so-called “muzzle flip” common to most lightweight rifles and handguns.
