A suppressor is a firearms accessory that reduces the sound of a fired shot to hearing-safe levels. Sometimes called “silencers,” suppressors are typically tubular devices which attach to the end of a firearm barrel to trap the expanding gases and mitigate the sound from a fired round using internal, cone-shaped baffles similar to an automobile muffler. Contrary to popular belief, suppressors do not “silence” a shot but instead reduce the emitted sound to a hearing-safe level. Suppressors can be made from a variety of metals and alloys and have a wide range of quality and durability. Suppressors are almost always attached to a firearm barrel via threads on the muzzle or by using a specialized muzzle device to which it is attached.
