Loaded Chamber Indicator (LCI)

Loaded Chamber Indicator (LCI)

An LCI, or “loaded chamber indicator,” is a device on some handguns that shows the firearm has a round in the chamber and is in a condition to be fired. In most cases, it is a small metal tab that is pushed slightly upwards along the length of the slide near the ejection port. Sometimes this tab is colored in such a way as to very obviously show a chambered round. It typically protrudes in some fashion when the firearm is loaded so that the status of the firearm may be checked physically as an alternative to visually. This is in contrast to a witness hole which solely allows for visual inspection. Some states require handguns sold in that state to be manufactured with LCIs, but many shooters believe these devices are redundant given the iron-clad firearm safety rule “treat every gun as if it is loaded.”
