There are several methods to carry a handgun for self-defense. One popular way is “outside the waistband” carry. With this method, the handgun is transported in a holster that is attached to a waistband of a garment or belt on the outside of the garment. OWB carry can be a method for both concealed carry—when the firearm is worn outside the waistband but is concealed by another “cover garment” like a jacket or sweater—and for open carry where no garment conceals the holstered handgun.
