SIG SAUER began as two separate companies: Swiss Industrial Company (Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft or SIG) - founded in 1853 in Switzerland as a wagon and railway car factory and J.P. Sauer & Sohn, established in 1751 in Germany as a firearms manufacturer. In 1976, SIG partnered with J.P. Sauer & Sohn to form SIG SAUER.
